Google and your KU Website
The KU website utilizes a local KU Google search appliance for web-based searches. Any department or organization using the KU template can add this search functionality by following the instructions below.
OK, what is a "subcollection?"
Google "subcollections" provide site-specific searches that search pages within a specific web site or group of documents. In most cases, searches are conducted across just one site. For example, to search just the Information Services web site, a subcollection is created to only return results with http://www.informationservices.ku.edu/ in the URL. But if you have multiple sites, such as the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who has many departments, multiple web addresses are allowed for one subcollection.
So how do I setup a Google subcollection for my site?
Step 1: Complete the form on the right of this page.
Step 2: Put the subcollection code given to you by Web Services in the KU Template "mygoogle" variable in your header file.
Step 3: Wait 1-3 days for Google to crawl your site. Search results should then appear when searching from your site and when selecting "Search this site" from the drop-down menu next to the Search box.
How can I optimize my pages to be found when searching?
For a great introduction, view Google's "Search Engine Optimization" guide.

How often will Google scan my site?
Google re-scans sites every 1 to 3 days. This is also how long it will take for the initial setup to take effect.
Can I tell Google NOT to scan my site?
Yes, by using a robots.txt file. See this tutorial: http://www.robotstxt.org/robotstxt.html
